Ukrainian Volodymyr Z. suspected of sabotage and damaging the Nord Stream gas pipeline is wanted by a European Arrest Warrant. He was still in Poland in July, but managed to escape to Ukraine. German media report on the results of the investigation so far. The sabotage was allegedly carried out by a group of six people: five men and one woman, from the deck of the ship “Andromeda”. Among them was Volodymyr Z.

In September 2022, three of the four strands of the two Nord Stream gas pipelines were destroyed by explosions at a depth of about 80 meters on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. It was through the Nord Stream gas pipeline that Russian gas flowed to Germany for years, despite protests from Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic countries, among others.

ARD and the newspapers “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” and “Die Zeit” simultaneously reported that three Ukrainian diving instructors were allegedly involved in the attacks on the Nord Stream pipeline. The German prosecutor's office issued a European arrest warrant for one of them. Volodymyr Z. was hiding in Pruszków near Warsaw until recently.

“Die Zeit” described the results of the investigation in an article. The command of the group that destroyed the pipelines was supposed to be on an inconspicuous boat – “Andromeda”. The group was supposed to consist of six people: five men and one woman. Among them was supposed to be Volodymyr Z. “Andromeda” was supposed to sail on the Baltic Sea, mooring in Denmark, Sweden and Poland – specifically in KoÅ‚obrzeg. The last port before the sabotage action was supposed to be the German Rostock.

Following publications in German media, the Polish prosecutor's office reported that the wanted Ukrainian citizen is no longer in our country, having left for his homeland in July. “Information about his search based on the German EAW was not in the database of persons sought by judicial authorities of other countries,” we read in the statement.

The head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration and coordinator of special services Tomasz Siemoniak was also asked about the case. – This is, of course, a question for the prosecutor's office, to which, as I understand it, the prosecutor's office answered. I had the opportunity to speak on the matter a few months ago, saying that the Polish prosecutor's office and Polish services have fully cooperated and are cooperating with the services of other countries, primarily German ones – said the politician.

Relations between Berlin and Kiev cannot suffer?

German media suggest that Poland may have deliberately failed to detain the Ukrainian diver for a long time. “Die Zeit” writes that “for weeks the new Polish government has had difficulty making a decision. In Poland, the construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline was for years considered a sin, so from this perspective a sabotage suspect like Volodymyr Z. would be a hero. (…) Could a 'hero' like him really be extradited?”

Ukraine has repeatedly denied that its services were behind the blowing up of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, but now the media are asking important questions addressed to the German authorities.

“What would happen if the Ukrainians were actually behind the attack? Will it be necessary to summon the Ukrainian ambassador? Will arms deliveries to Kiev be stopped? How should we deal with a country that destroyed the infrastructure through which Germany wanted to supply itself with gas?” asks the German “Die “Zeit”.

German government spokesman Wolfgang Buechner stated that relations between Berlin and Kiev cannot suffer because of the “criminal activities of individuals”. – The federal government cannot provide any information on the status of the proceedings. (…) Of course, it does not change the fact that Russia is waging an aggressive war against Ukraine in violation of international law – emphasized Wolfgang Buechner.

The most important question still remains unanswered – who was behind the high-profile action.
