Italian pilots will monitor North Macedonia's airspace as part of NATO

The authorities of North Macedonia and Italy have signed an agreement on the inclusion of Italian aviation in the NATO mission to patrol the airspace over North Macedonia. Until now, neighboring Greece's aircraft were responsible for patrolling North Macedonia's airspace.

The defense ministers of North Macedonia and Italy, Slavjanka Petrowska and Guido Crosetto, signed an agreement on Friday in Skopje on the inclusion of Italian combat aviation in the NATO mission to patrol the airspace over North Macedonia, Beta news agency reported.

– Italy and its air force officially join the NATO air patrol mission in Macedonian skies. Italian and Greek military aircraft, in cooperation with the Macedonian Air Force, guarantee our safety, said Minister Petrowska after signing the contract at the Pilot Training Center in the “Petrovac” barracks at the Skopje airport.

With the launch of the NATO Air Policing mission in December 2021, the skies of North Macedonia officially became part of the Alliance's collective air patrol system.

Until now, neighboring Greece's aircraft were responsible for patrolling North Macedonia's airspace. The air patrol mission in North Macedonia is managed by NATO Air Command, with tactical control exercised by the Joint Air Operations Center in Torrejon, Spain.

North Macedonia joined NATO on March 27, 2020.
