The media reported that both men were rescued by soldiers stationed in the area as part of Operation Safe Streets. – It’s a miracle we’re alive. It could have been much, much worse. We are alive because of the quick response of members of the military, Donne said. He added that a moment after they got to the surface, a nearby tree collapsed and fell into a hole, seriously damaging a water pipe. – We could have been underwater. Fortunately, we came out of it with only a few scratches, he said.

The prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation into the causes of the sinkhole. They are probably related to the city’s sewage system. The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, explained that in the southern part of the city there is a problem “with a sewage system that has not been maintained for many years.” He assured that work is underway to implement a system for continuous monitoring of sewage and waterworks in order to carry out preventive measures against similar situations in the future.

This is not the first time a similar sinkhole has appeared in Naples. For example in 2021, a huge hole with an area of about 500 square meters it formed in front of the hospital and then several cars also fell into it.
