The trial regarding the murder of a 21-year-old British woman was intense in public opinion ItalyGreat Britain and USA. A student was found dead after a party with young people in Perugia. Knox initially blamed Lumumba, who had nothing to do with the crime, but was later completely cleared of the charges.

Then she and her former partner, student Raffaele Sollecito, were sentenced for involvement in the murder. Both were later acquitted after spending almost four years in an Italian prison.

Knox won't go to jail

Knox moved to have the slander judgment annulled, arguing that her defense rights had been violated. Supreme Court ordered a new trial in this case.

The 36-year-old American told the court: – I didn't want to slander Patrick. He was my friend, he took care of me and comforted me after the loss of my friend. “I'm sorry I didn't resist the pressure and he suffered,” she admitted. She explained that when Meredith died, she was “exhausted, scared and lost.”

Lumumba's lawyer, who initiated the trial, requested that the judgment be reinstated. The court agreed to this request.

Although Knox was sentenced to three years in prison, she will not go to prison. The court took into account the years she served behind bars after being wrongly convicted of involvement in murder.

The only person legally convicted of Kercher's murder is Rudy Guede, an immigrant from Côte d'Ivoire. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He left prison after 13 years in 2021.

After returning to the USA, after being acquitted by an Italian court, Amanda Knox turned to writing books and journalism.
