Paralyzing crowds and chaos in the port of Capri pose a threat to public safety, mayor Marino Lembo warns. The local government official appealed to the prefect, i.e. the head of the local administration, for intervention and action to ensure order on the island.

In the letter, quoted by the daily Il Mattino, the mayor listed the daily serious problems on the island.

Letter from the Mayor of Capri

He explained that crowds were gathering on the quay and in the whole port area, in the nearby squares, and there were very long queues at the ticket offices and at bus stops.

All this, he noted, is the result of the high number of calling ships, hydrofoils and ferries. In his opinion, the situation is already serious and “increasingly dangerous and unbearable”.

He noted that not only the number of ships increased, but also the number of passengers arriving on them, despite the fact that the size and capabilities of the port have not changed since the 1930s.

Crowds paralyzing the port

The result, wrote Marino Lembo, is countless crowds that paralyze the port and the quay, posing a threat to the integrity of people and the risk of accidents. The mayor emphasized that it has already happened several times that people fell into the water.

He called for the development of measures that will make the summer in Capri calm, safe and, as he added, less chaotic.
