A fountain of lava lit up the sky above Etna. The eruption occurred on the night from Saturday to Sunday, and in the morning fine volcanic material fell on nearby towns. We received the materials on Kontakt 24.
During the night, strong volcanic activity was recorded in the area of the Etna cone. The amplitude of the tremors increased from hour to hour, until finally, just before dawn, an eruption occurred in the Voragine crater. A column of lava and volcanic ash rose into the sky, and small volcanic fragments fell on nearby towns.
Report by Reporterka 24
The moment of the volcanic eruption was captured by Reporterka 24, Ms. Agnieszka, who sent us photos and a recording.
As Etna guide Giuseppe Amendolia explained to Reuters, this is the second clear activity in less than 48 hours. The cone has been experiencing an increase in volcanic activity for some time now – in early July, clouds of ash obscuring the sky forced some flights from the nearby Catania airport to be canceled.
Etna, a 3,330-meter-high volcano in Sicily, is the highest volcanic cone in Europe and one of the most active in the world. It has the longest documented eruption history of any volcano, with the first records dating back to 425 BC.
