More than 820 migrants on board 16 boats arrived from midnight on Wednesday to the Italian island of Lampedusa, the Ansa news agency reported in the evening. It is another day of massive influx of migrants arriving from Africa, including from the port of Safakis in Tunisia.

More than 900 migrants are housed in an overcrowded center on the island. Subsequent groups are successively transported to other points of stay, including Pozzallo in Sicily.

The Italian authorities want to fight illegal immigration

Prime Minister Italian Giorgia Meloni, presenting the government’s information to parliament on Wednesday before the EU summit, which is also supposed to be about migration, stated: “They proposed that countries refusing to relocate migrants should pay those that do. But I would never agree to them paying me for turning Italy into a refugee camp in Europe.”

The head of the government pointed to the need for financial resources to defend the Union’s external borders, “not to manage illegal immigration, but to fight it”.

More than 55,000 migrants have arrived in Italy since the beginning of the year.
