Since the beginning of the year, 53,000 migrants have come to Italy. This is over 20,000 more than in the same period last year. The League leader, a former deputy prime minister, argues that migrants should not be allowed into Italy and accuses the European Union of failing to act. He himself is facing up to 15 years in prison. He is accused of depriving migrants of liberty.

Italian authorities agreed to accept 800 migrants, including children and pregnant women, who were rescued by the German NGO Sea-Eye. The ship with the migrants landed on the coast of Sicily on Saturday.

Former deputy prime minister and minister of the interior, and now League leader Matteo Salvini, is very critical of the admission of refugees to Italy. In his opinion, not releasing boats with migrants on board “means saving lives and protecting Italy”. – Europe from this point of view has not done this and is doing nothing – he added.

Salvini called on the current Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese to take action in the face of the influx of migrants. – If she would like to confront and learn how to intervene in order to block the influx of migrants, I am available – declared the politician.

This year, more than 53,000 migrants have come to Italy. In November a year ago, the figure was less than 30,000.

Salvini faces up to 15 years in prison

Against Salvini, it goes on process related to the influx of migrants to Italy. In 2019, the crew of the Spanish non-governmental organization Open Arms, patrolling the Mediterranean Sea, took 147 migrants from the sinking boat on board and set a course for Malta. The country’s authorities refused to accept the migrants. Then the ship headed towards the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Salvini – then the minister of the interior and the deputy prime minister – closed Italian ports to NGO ships and prevented the migrants rescued at sea from disembarking. There was no such consent for three weeks. The ship was finally accepted when the court in Agrigento issued a decision. Migrants disembarked. For their imprisonment, Salvini faces 15 years in prison.
