A caregiver for the elderly admitted Friday to killing four seniors, Italian media reported. The man reported to a Carabinieri station with his lawyer and said he killed his charges with large doses of medication. “Out of compassion,” because he couldn't stand to watch them suffer.

This is the story of a warm and caring caregiver who became an “angel of death” – this is how the Ansa news agency described the case of a 48-year-old Neapolitan. He reported to a Carabinieri station in the city of Caserta, near Naples, that he had killed four elderly people he was caring for.

After giving his statement at the police station, the man was taken into custody.

He said he gave too many meds “out of compassion”

The media quote his testimony, in which he admitted that he took the lives of those in his care “out of compassion and Christian mercy, because they were sick and suffering”. He gave them four times the dose of medication. As he pointed out, he decided to report himself in order to receive help and not kill any more, because he was unable to bear the suffering of the sick.

Among those he killed were an 89-year-old and a 96-year-old. It was previously officially stated that all four deaths were from natural causes.

According to Italian media, the guardian had previous convictions for fraud and theft.
