Some streets in Florence on Friday looked like rivers, others looked like snow. So much rain had accumulated that cars were stuck in the water on the crossing under the viaduct. Divers had to intervene. All this after a storm with downpour and hail.

Violent storm hit the capital of Tuscany on Friday, including the areas of Pistoia and Prato, but it was Florence that was particularly affected. The fire department said in the afternoon that “dozens of interventions are ongoing”.

Footage posted on social media shows that the streets were completely flooded. Under water, he found a passage under an overpass, which resulted in the two vans being half submerged in the water. The fire department reported that divers had to intervene. No people were found in the cars. There is also no information about other victims of severe weather events.

Other roads turned white from heavy hail. In some places they looked as if they were covered with snow.

According to local media, the downpours occurred in spots. The rainfall was so heavy that within an hour one station recorded 35 liters of water per square meter, while others recorded 16 and 9 liters per square meter, for example.

During this time, about 400 were registered in Florence lightning strikes.

Weather Alerts

Dangerous phenomena are still possible. The northern half of Italy, including Tuscany, was under severe weather warnings for thunderstorms on Friday evening. A level two alert has been issued for the Emilia-Romagna region.
