The action was carried out in the Mediterranean Sea, the weather conditions were difficult. Four merchant ships nearby supported the rescue of migrants.
During the first operation, the Coast Guard assisted 70 migrants on a drifting boat in the Lampedusa area, to which they were then transferred.
A large ship guard took 350 migrants from a fishing boat on board. They were rescued during a long operation in Italian waters with the support of Italian coast guard aircraft. The crews of ships in the operation area also helped.
The vessel was in danger due to poor sea conditions and the large number of people on board, the Ansa news agency reported. There were 40 minors among the migrants. The ship took all the survivors to Porto Empedocle in Sicily.
