Italy will build residence centers for migrants in Albania, which will ultimately be able to accommodate up to 36,000 people a year. Migrants who reached Italy by sea are supposed to go there. The protocol on this matter was signed on Monday in Rome by the heads of government of both countries, Giorgia Meloni and Edi Rama. The opposition in Rome criticizes the agreement and warns against creating an “Italian Guantanamo”.

Prime Minister Meloni, informing about the agreement, drew attention to the close cooperation between Rome and Tirana in various areas, and considered the current protocol to deepen it.

Italy under migration pressure
– When we started discussing, we assumed that mass illegal immigration was a phenomenon that no European Union country could face alone, said the Italian Prime Minister. That is why, as she added, cooperation with other countries is so important.
Italy is under enormous migration pressure. Over 140,000 migrants have arrived since the beginning of the year.
