According to the Forbes ranking, the average age of modern billionaires is 65 years. Clemente Del Vecchio is only eighteen. It is estimated that its capital is worth USD 3.5 billion, i.e. nearly PLN 15 billion. Who is he and how did he come into possession of such a fortune?

Italian Clemente Del Vecchio is 18 years old, the youngest of the children of Leonardo Del Vecchio, the founder of Luxottica, a giant manufacturer of lenses and glasses. According to Forbes, he is currently the youngest billionaire in the world. Considering the average age of the world’s billionaires, which oscillates around 65, Del Vecchio Jr. is a sensation. As the Italian press writes, this makes him “one of the most desirable golden descendants on our planet”.

Who is Clemente Del Vecchio

Clemente had just turned 18 when his father – nicknamed the king of glasses, owner of m. Ray-Ban – passed away on June 27 last year. In May, the “golden offspring” will be 19 years old. The capital it currently has is estimated at approximately USD 3.5 billion, i.e. nearly PLN 15 billion. Clemente is not an only child, but he will not have to share his fortune with his siblings. According to Forbes, Leonardo Del Vecchio left $27.3 billion in his will to his descendants.

Leonardo Del Vecchio himself was born in 1935 in a poor family. Father died before he was born. The mother was unable to support five sons and when Leonardo was seven years old, she gave him to an orphanage. At the age of fifteen, he started an apprenticeship in a factory and then enrolled in a night design school. He became more and more fascinated by glasses and frames.

He opened his first frame shop in Venice, three years later he founded Luxottica. In the 1980s, Del Vecchia began to conquer the European and American markets. In the mid-1990s, it became the largest manufacturer and distributor on the global optical market. It offers e.g. Oakley, Vogue Eyewear and Ray-Ban. The offer also includes glasses by Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Dolce&Gabbana, Versace and Prada. It opened offices in 162 countries and employed over 65,000 employees in six thousand stores around the world.

The six children of Del Vecchio

The structure of the Del Vecchio family is somewhat complicated. Clemente has five siblings. Along with 23-year-old Luca, who also inherited $3.5 billion, he shares a mother, Sabina Grossi, and a father.

Sabina Grossi (former manager of Luxottica), however, was never married to the creator of the fortune. Leonardo Del Vecchio previously had two spouses. The first, Luciana Nervo, gave birth to three children: Claudio, Marisa and Paola. With the other, Nicoletta Zampillo, he married twice (in 1997 and – after divorcing in 2000 – in 2010). The couple has a son, Leonard Maria.

Little is known about Clemente himself. His wealth is based on the family company Delfin founded by his father. His share of it fell to him, and it was enough to jump to the top of the ranking of the richest young people on the planet.
