Venice in Italy boasts more tourist accommodation than its inhabitants. Such proportions are controversial. – The number of beds must be limited, said Matteo Secchi, representative of the permanent residents’ association, on Monday.

The Venessia.com group is leading the fight, demanding the rights of residents and raising the alarm about the constant depopulation of the city. Its representative Matteo Secchi provided the latest data, which shows that there are over 50,000 accommodation places for tourists in Venice, while the number of inhabitants is 49.2 thousand.

Venice has more and more places to stay for tourists

As noted, there has been an unprecedented increase in bed places by another 800 in recent months.

Secchi, quoted by Ansa, said that just as the authorities blocked the opening of new souvenir shops, they should now urgently limit the spread of offers of premises intended for short rental. – Such structures are often managed by people from outside the city, while the residents bear the burden of the resulting difficulties – he noted.

According to the association, more and more residents are leaving the city due to difficult living conditions in the historic center as a result of what it calls a “tourist monoculture”.

The authorities of Florence, which is also struggling with a massive influx of tourists, introduced a ban this year on opening new short-rent accommodations.
