The first town in Italy was officially recognized as tsunami-prepared. The town of Minturno in the capital region of Lazio received this certificate from UNESCO after four years of work.

“Tsunami Ready” – this is a title awarded to places in the world where an action plan has been developed in the event of these dangerous waves. Residents must be familiarized with it so that they can respond to alarm sirens. In Minturno, Italy, located between Rome and Naples, during four years of work, exercises were carried out, evacuation routes were developed, and information boards with the inscription: “Tsunami threat” were placed on the beaches. There are recommendations in Italian and English: “In the event of an earthquake, sudden retreat of the sea and tsunami alert, immediately leave the coastal area, quickly go to higher ground, use the evacuation routes.”

The goal is to achieve the highest level of preparedness for a threat that involves the entire local population, local administration and Civil Defense.

The origins of the seaside commune, inhabited by 17,000 people, date back to the 6th century. The historic part of the town is surrounded by walls with towers, and there is also an archaeological area.

Italy is located in a seismically active area, and the area around Minturno, just like nearby Naples, is one of the most seismically and volcanically active areas in Europe.
