Firefighters on their way to action in Jantar and a beach full of tourists. A vehicle with sirens blaring had to maneuver between blankets and screens, because despite appeals to create a life corridor, some vacationers did not respond to calls to remove their belongings. And – as the firefighters emphasize – this corridor saves lives and health.

The recording, which the Volunteer Fire Department published on its social media, shows a fire truck with sirens blaring and a beach in Jantar full of tourists relaxing. Some on blankets, others under umbrellas, and still others surrounded by windbreaks, which are popular on Polish beaches.

It was Saturday (August 24). After 3 p.m., firefighters were called to a forest litter fire at the entrance to beach number 77. And… there was a problem. Despite the firefighters' appeals to beachgoers relaxing by the water to create a so-called life corridor, some people completely ignored their appeals. The recording shows how firefighters have to maneuver between blankets and screens placed on the beach.

This corridor saves lives

As the firefighters from Jantar reminded us, the emergency corridor is a free space left for emergency vehicles, e.g. rescue vehicles, which go to the patient, road accident or other life-threatening and safety-threatening events. It is also called a rescue corridor. It provides a shorter travel time for rescue services, which increases the chances of victims receiving help in time and often even survival.

It is not a path marked with posts, flags or horizontal lines. It is a conventional space created by all the people in the path of the emergency vehicle or vehicles.

“Making it easier for an emergency vehicle to pass, especially by immediately moving out of its way and creating an 'emergency corridor', is the responsibility of each of us,” the volunteer firefighters from Jantar stressed.

Time matters

In an online post, they also explained that due to the terrain conditions, access to some areas of the forest is only possible from the beach. “A forest fire in the current weather situation is extremely dangerous, the coniferous forest favors its rapid spread, a forest litter or tree crown fire may consequently threaten your safety. The spread of the fire source can reach up to a dozen or so meters per minute,” they emphasized in the announcement. That is why – as they added – the shortest possible travel time is so important, and this is only possible when the road is clear.

They also appealed to internet users to promote the idea of creating life corridors. – “Pass it on to your families, friends, tourists who come to your guesthouses. If you can, print our sign and place it in your guesthouses, shops, catering outlets, let it be visible. Although the season is coming to an end, it is still going on, and the elements will continue to awaken!” – they emphasized.
