A Chinese naval research vessel has entered Japanese territorial waters, Reuters reported, citing Japan’s defense ministry. It was the first such incident in the area since December last year.

A Chinese naval research vessel entered Japanese waters near islands off the coast of Kagoshima prefecture at around 2:30 a.m. (6:30 p.m. Saturday) and left at around 4:10 a.m., the Reuters news agency quoted the Japanese defense ministry as saying.

The Japanese government conveyed to Beijing through diplomatic channels its concern over the unit’s actions, the ministry said.

The Senkaku dispute

Reuters noted that Chinese ships have repeatedly entered territorial waters Japan or passed through adjacent areas, most notably around the Senkaku Islands, a group of islets in the East China Sea controlled by Japan claimed by the Middle Kingdom.

Research vessels are often used for reconnaissance, such as determining underwater topography for submarine navigation.
