The disaster has happened during a night training flight. According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, it was probably the result of a collision between the two machines. So far, the death of one crew member has been confirmed, whose body was fished out of the water. Rescuers are still looking for seven others.

Defense Minister Minoru Kihara explained that two SH-60K helicopters of the Maritime Self-Defense Force were on board four crew members each. Contact with them was lost late on Saturday night.

Japan. Military helicopter crash. One person is dead

Public broadcaster NHK reported that communication with one of the helicopters was lost at 10:38 p.m. (local time) near the island of Torishima, and a minute later alarm signal. About 25 minutes later, communication with another plane was also lost in the same area, AFP reported.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. According to Minoru Kihara, both helicopters could collide with each other, before they fell into the water. The Maritime Self-Defense Force, due to the fact that there were no other aircraft or ships in the nearby waters, concluded that the involvement of another country in the incident was unlikely. Rescuers found the flight data recorder and metal fragmentswhich probably come from crashed machines.
