This year's meteorological autumn was the warmest in Japan's history. According to local experts, the average air temperature from September to November was 1.97 degrees higher than average. This had an impact on nature.

On Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the average temperature from early September to late October was 1.97 degrees Celsius above average. It was therefore the warmest period of meteorological autumn in the history of measurements, i.e. for 126 years.

Meteorologists explained that thermometers showed values higher by an average of 2.4 degrees Celsius in Tokyo, 2.9 degrees Celsius in Nagoya and 1.2 degrees Celsius in Sapporo, located on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Late autumn leaves

Warmer than usual autumn resulted in the leaves turning yellow and red very late – admiring autumn colors is very popular among tourists. The peak of this period, usually falling in November, this year is scheduled for December 5 in Tokyo and December 9 in Osaka.

In Kyoto, a company that organizes night train trips through illuminated autumn forests decided to extend the travel period – the leaves had not yet turned to a satisfactory degree.

Japan also recorded its hottest summer on record in 2024, fueled by extreme heatwaves. This year, the picturesque snow cover of Mount Fuji also disappeared for an exceptionally long time – it appeared only at the beginning of November, and not at the beginning of October as usual. Climate scientists predict that 2024 will likely be the hottest year on record – not only in Japan, but around the world.
