According to local media, the first avalanche occurred on Sunday afternoon on the slope of Mount Rishiri. Three snowboarders were swept away by a mass of snow. Two participants of the expedition managed to save themselves, but the rescuers did not manage to reach the third person, a middle-aged woman, in time.

The second fatality was a young man riding a snowmobile in the area of ​​Mount Higashi-Kariba, near the city of Shimamaki. The police received a report of an avalanche around 3:40 p.m. The man was moving with a group of 15 other people, but at some point he separated from it and tried to climb the mountain alone. No one else was hurt.
