Japan’s meteorological agency urged residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution and stay away from dangerous areas near the crater, Reuters reported. Alert level three is in force on a five-level, increasing scale.

Suwanose, measuring 20 square kilometers, belongs to the Tokara archipelago in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan. It is inhabited by only a few dozen people.
