A 69-year-old man from Jaworzno is suspected of keeping strictly protected birds without a permit. The police also found traps used to catch birds in his house. He kept goldfinches and linnets in cages.
Criminal investigators from the department combating economic crime in Jaworzno obtained information about a 69-year-old man who was allegedly keeping birds of protected species. On Tuesday, they went to his property to check it out. During the search, they discovered several birds of the linnet and goldfinch species, which are strictly protected species.
As we read in the police statement, the so-called a live trap, a net used to illegally catch wild birds, as well as more cages used to keep birds, “suggesting that the man had been poaching for a long time and could have caught more birds in the past.”
An environmental and wild animal protection specialist from the Forest Emergency Service of the Katowice Forest District was called to the site, who confirmed that the birds on the property are protected species and their possession is prohibited.
He had been luring and imprisoning birds for probably a year
The 69-year-old was arrested. He was charged with possessing protected animals and tools intended for poaching. – He admitted to the alleged acts, claiming that he caught birds for his own purposes – the Jaworznica police say. According to investigators’ findings, the man had probably been illegally keeping the above-mentioned birds on his property for about a year, which he had previously lured into traps.
The man will be charged with an offense under the Hunting Law Act, punishable by imprisonment from 3 months to up to 5 years.
The birds are currently under observation at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Then they are to be released.
