The famous British musician Jeff Beck has died at the age of 78, his family has announced. He belonged to the pantheon of rock guitarists of the late 1960s. He won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Jeff Beck, a British musician considered to be a guitar virtuoso, died in New York at the age of 78. “He died on Tuesday after suddenly falling ill with bacterial meningitis,” his family said in a statement Wednesday.

Beck in 2011 was ranked 5th on the list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time by The Rolling Stone magazine. He collaborated with artists such as: Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder and ZZ Top.

According to the agency, AP Beck belonged to the pantheon of rock guitarists of the late 1960s, alongside the likes of Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. “Jeff Beck is the best guitarist in the world,” Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry told The New York Times in 2010, “someone like that only comes along once in a generation or two.”

Beck has won eight Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice – once with the Yardbirds in 1992 and again as a solo artist in 2009.
