Amazon founder Jeff Bezos donated $ 100 million to the Barack Obama Foundation, Puck News reported. This is the largest ever donation to a foundation by the former president of the United States.

Bezos donates $ 100 million to the Obama Foundation

According to reports from the portal, the donation had no specific purpose for which the money was to be allocated, but Bezos was asked to ask that the square next to the Obama presidential center in Chicago be named after John Lewis, a longtime congressman and one of the leaders of the African American rights movement in the 1960s. The former Obama spokesman, Jay Carney, who currently works for Bezos, was to help conclude the deal.

Building a library and a presidential center is one of the main goals of the Obama Foundation, which also includes runs a scholarship program for young leaders from around the world. Bezos is not the only billionaire who has contributed to the former president’s foundation in this way, although the amount of his donation has been the largest so far. 50 million was donated to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Google and Amazon investor John Doerr and Napster creator Sean Parker. In total, the Obama Foundation has already raised over $ 720 million, slightly less than half of the $ 1.6 billion target.

Bezos’ philanthropic activity

According to Puck News, Bezos’s donation – who this year resigned from his position as Amazon’s executive director after 27 years – is part of his philanthropic work to improve his reputation by supporting large and well-known foundations and activists. $ 100 million was allocated, among others, to for the environmental organizations World Resources Institute and Nature Conservancy, and 200 million for the Smithsonian Institution, an organization that oversees a wide network of public museums.
