Officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Border Guard detained another five people in connection with trade in cigarettes without excise duty. Among them is an 80-year-old man who is suspected of leading an organized criminal group. During the operations, cigarettes and tobacco were found. The State Treasury's losses as a result of the gang's operation amount to over PLN 9 million.
Officers of the Central Police Investigation Bureau in Olsztyn and the Border Guard station in Jelenia Góra are investigating a group dealing with tobacco crime. The activities are carried out under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office in Jelenia Góra.
The services carried out another attack on this group. 5 men aged 53 to 80 were detained in the Lower Silesian and Łódź voivodeships. Among those detained is an 80-year-old man suspected of leading an organized criminal group. As a result of the searches, cigarettes of various brands and tobacco were found.
“The detainees were brought to the District Prosecutor's Office in Jelenia Góra. The charges presented by the prosecutor concerned leading and participating in an organized criminal group and committing criminal and fiscal crimes. The activities of the detainees could have resulted in a tax depletion of the State Treasury amounting to over PLN 9 million. These acts are punishable by up to 8 years' imprisonment,” he informs Central Police Investigation Bureau.
Over 2 million cigarettes without excise duty
A total of 17 suspects are involved in the entire proceedings. During the services' operations, over 2 million cigarettes and 12 tons of tobacco were found, and the suspects' property worth over PLN 2 million was seized. The total estimated losses of the State Treasury as a result of the group's activities amount to over PLN 25 million.
