At the next week’s NATO summit in Vilnius, we will establish the NATO-Ukraine Council, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Friday at a press conference. The aim is to strengthen cooperation with Kiev.

Boss FOR THIS expects Allies to agree to a three-part package to support the fight against Russia Ukraine. One of the parts of this package is to be the creation of the NATO-Ukraine Council. In addition, Stoltenberg assessed that a long-term military support program should be created to bring NATO forces and the military closer together Ukraine.

Allies are to help in the necessary transformations in Ukraine’s security sector and health care.

– I am convinced that we will find a common way to clarify the issue of (Ukraine’s) membership, but I will not give details, they will be presented at the Vilnius summit – said Stoltenberg, answering journalists’ questions.


Increase in defense spending

Stoltenberg also spoke of an 8.3 percent increase in Alliance defense spending this year. “This is the largest increase in years and the ninth year in a row that these expenses have increased,” he said.

The NATO secretary general also stated that he expects “we will continue to increase defense spending”. He expressed hope that more NATO countries would spend more than 2 percent of their national GDP on this purpose in the future.

Stoltenberg recognized that at a “critical moment for our Euro-Atlantic security”, during the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is necessary to deepen the involvement of NATO members in joint actions.

The next NATO summit will be held in Vilnius on July 11-12.
