Jerzy Stuhr struggled with laryngeal cancer in 2011. He managed to overcome the disease. In mid-May 2023, “Gazeta Wyborcza” reported that a few weeks earlier, the 76-year-old actor had undergone a second surgery to remove laryngeal cancer. – Recurrence is a common occurrence in cancer. But I endured. I have exactly the same problem as Ziobro. The same cut – admitted Stuhr in a new interview for “Newsweek”.

When asked by Aleksandra Pawlicka what he thought about the former minister of justice when he saw him after the operation, he replied: “I have sympathy for him because I was lying on the same bed. And I know what it is. I know how it hurts. I know what it is. means not being able to raise my arm, not being able to stand up. I was in the ICU for almost three weeks.” As the actor added, the key experience of the last year for him was “Getting old. Studying how people change.”

Jerzy Stuhr on the “fight against memory”

Working on my role in… the play “Geniusz”, which premiered at the Polonia Theater in Warsaw in February, he called “the fight against memory”. As he noted, this is the result of “among other things” a stroke. – But also old age, this disease that sooner or later affects every person – says Stuhr.

– I talk to myself all the time. Yesterday, the day before the show, I was talking to myself all the time. I repeat the lines. I get up at six in the morning and I talk in my mind or out loud – said the actor when asked how he deals with memory problems. – It's a fear, a damn strong fear that your memory will fail you on stage. I didn't have this before. I went on Italian stages and played a role calmly in a language I practically didn't know. Now I wouldn't dare. I would be afraid, for sure, he added.

Jerzy Stuhr – illness and collision involving the actor

In the past, Jerzy Stuhr struggled with, among others: with stroke, heart attack and laryngeal cancer. In mid-May last year, his son, Maciej Stuhr, announced that the actor he is in hospital in the intensive care unit and uses a wheelchair. Less than a week later, a son he thanked the doctors “for saving” his father's life.

In the fall of 2022, there was a collision involving the actor. According to investigators' findings Jerzy Stuhr October 17, 2022, while turning the car, he failed to yield the right-of-way to the motorcycle driver, leading to a road collision and posing a threat to road safety. As it turned out, the actor had about 0.7 per mille of alcohol in his body.

Two separate proceedings were conducted in connection with the incident. The first one concerned driving under the influence of alcohol. The conviction in this case was passed in February 2023, and then in June it was upheld by the appeals court. Stuhr was sentenced to a fine of PLN 12,000 and almost PLN 4.3 thousand. PLN for court costs. He lost his driving license for three years. The second proceeding concerned the collision with the motorcyclist itself. The actor was found guilty and fined PLN 4,000 for causing a risk to road safety while under the influence of alcohol.
