Jerzy Stuhr, one of the most outstanding Polish actors, has died. He was 77 years old. He made his big screen debut in the 1970s. He gained extraordinary popularity for his roles in Feliks Falk's “Wodzirej”, Krzysztof Kieślowski's “Amator” and “Dekalog X”, and Juliusz Machulski's comedies “Seksmisja” and “Kiler”, quotes from which have become a permanent part of the Polish language. We will also remember the films he directed, such as “Spis cudzołożnic” or “Wielkie zwierza”. Even the youngest viewers know his dubbing roles and associate his voice with the character of Donkey – the witty friend of the green ogre from the “Shrek” films.

Figure: He defined my career

– Jerzy marked me, marked my career and I think that also in the context of acting I am who I am, to a large extent thanks to him – said Katarzyna Figura. – First, as a teenager I watched his films and I was fascinated, and I really wanted to be not necessarily like Marilyn Monroe or Brigitte Bardot, but like Jerzy Stuhr – she continued.

She said that she played her first role in a film alongside him. “He was always an idol, a role model for me,” she said.

Machulski: he was also a brilliant stuntman

Director Juliusz Machulski also spoke. – From today's perspective, I see how lucky I was to have made five films with him, two television plays and produced four films – he said. – He is more than an actor for me, he is family – he added.

– Jurek Stuhr, apart from being a brilliant actor, both in the theater, on television, and in dubbing, was also a brilliant stuntman – Machulski recalled. – He did most of these stunts himself and paid for it with sciatica, but he was brave until the end – he said, talking about the shooting of the film “Deja vu” in Odessa In Ukraine.

– We knew each other so well that I didn't give him any comments, he would get the text and he would know what to play, he would add various things, after all, he came up with “Eagle's Shadow” himself – said Machulski, referring to a scene in the film “Kiler”. – He came up with some of the dialogues in “Sexmission” ad hoc on the set, “Ours were here” or “darkness I see darkness”, after all, these are his words – he added.

Seweryn: he was my sensitivity, he was our world

– A great artist has passed away, a great citizen of this country, a patriot has passed away. A man has passed away, whom we will miss, whose judgment we will miss. A man has passed away, whose films I personally experienced very deeply, because they were films of my generation. Jerzy was my sensitivity as well, he was our world – said Andrzej Seweryn.

As he added, “Jerzy was a versatile artist, he could sing, dance, he could play tragedies, comedies, he was a great Fikalski, he was a great Amateur for Kieślowski, he was a Master of Ceremonies for Falk”. – He was a great father, Jerzy was a great teacher – he pointed out.

– He always spoke the truth. He was not afraid to express his views, his opinions. Very sharp sometimes, about power, about the Church. He was a fighting man. Brother: insanely charming

– He was incredibly charming. Mr. Jerzy was a bit down to earth and a bit out of this world. Down to earth because he treated what he did with a crazy distance. He didn't consider himself to be someone special and he expressed it in a completely sincere way – said Jacek Braciak about the deceased actor.

– We waited in front of the theatre, before he would slowly come from his apartment to the theatre and we waited for his unusual, for us: “what's going on?” with his eyes wide open. It was such an unearthly manifestation of the fact that he had such moments of wonder like a child. Despite his maturity in being in the world, it was wonderful, because it showed his such freshness and sensitivity to what he was experiencing – he added.
