The White House said US First Lady Jill Biden underwent surgery to remove skin cancer in a military hospital Wednesday. “The First Lady is experiencing facial swelling but is in good spirits and feeling well,” the doctor said.

US First Lady Jill Biden She successfully underwent surgery to remove basal cell carcinoma of the skin, the president’s physician, Kevin O’Connor, said on Wednesday. The cancer was removed in two places – from the face and chest. In addition, a small lesion was detected on the first lady’s left eyelid, which was also removed and sent for examination.

O’Connor said in a statement released by the White House that the president’s wife underwent a surgical procedure called the Mohs method, which consists in precise excision of the patient’s cancer cells.

Initially, doctors at the Walter Reed Military Hospital were supposed to remove the cancer only from her face, but in preparation for surgery, similar lesions were also discovered on her chest.

The president’s doctor noted that all cancer cells had been removed, and the type of cancer detected did not tend to “spread” or metastasize, as is the case with melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma. “As expected, the first lady is experiencing facial swelling but is in good spirits and feeling well,” the doctor said.

President Joe Biden “He wanted to be present to support” the first lady, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said. “They have been married for 45 years and he wanted to be with his wife,” she said.

The presidential couple – emphasized the Reuters agency – is strongly committed to promoting the fight against cancer. Last year, the president announced an initiative to reduce cancer mortality by 50 percent over the next 25 years.

In 2015, the president’s son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer at the age of 46.
