Although Johnny Depp and Amber Heard split up in 2016, their court fight continues. A New York court granted the actor’s request to disclose whether his ex-wife had donated the divorce money to charity, as declared in the agreement.
As USA Today said on Monday, a New York court partially granted Depp’s request by his attorneys. Lawyer Benjamin Chew said in a statement that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was to submit to the court documents that could be used to determine whether Amber Heard had contributed any funds to the organization.
The star’s lawyers, including Tim Burton’s films, say Heard is lying about donating money to charities. The thing is, with the divorce settlement, Heard declared that the seven million dollars she received from the divorce would be donated in full to the ACLU and the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.
Johny Depp vs. “The Sun”
In November last year, Depp lost a high-profile caseon the tabloid publishers “The Sun” for calling him “the female boxer.”
When the actor’s lawyers filed for an appeal, Heard testified that she was financially independent of Depp at all times and that the sum of the divorce money she received was donated to charity.
Another Depp attorney, Andrew Caldecott, stated in March of this year that the information about charity support was “a calculated and manipulated lie” that “tipped the scales off Mr. Depp from the outset.” The actor’s attorneys say that one of the reasons Depp lost his appeal against the British tabloid was precisely Heard’s alleged donation declaration.
Lawyers representing “The Sun” rejected the actor’s arguments, stating that Heard had committed to donating the appropriate amount within 10 years and that the actress had made several donations for the right purpose. The judge then decided that the $ 7 million donation was not something you’d expect from a “gold digger” in the original.
