Three U.S. soldiers were killed and more than 20 wounded in an overnight drone attack on a small U.S. base in Jordan near the border with Syria. The White House issued a statement. The murder of Americans in Tower 22 means an escalation of the already uncertain situation in the Middle East, notes CNN.

“On January 28, three American soldiers were killed and 25 were injured by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAS) attack that occurred at a base in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria,” US Central Command said in a press release ( CENTCOM).

“Out of respect for the families and in accordance with Department of State policy, the identities of the victims will be withheld until 24 hours have passed from the time the next of kin have been informed,” the statement said.

CNN notes that this is the first time American soldiers have died as a result of enemy fire in the Middle East since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip.

“The murder of three Americans at Tower 22 in Jordan near the border with Syria marks an escalation of the already uncertain situation in the Middle East,” writes CNN.

The station notes that it is unclear why the air defense did not intercept the drone.

American troops are stationed in Jordan as part of an advisory mission.

According to reports from Reuters, Muhannad al Mubaidin, spokesman for the Jordanian government, said on Sunday evening on Al-Mamlaka public television that the target of the attack was a location in the territory of Syria American base in Al-Tanf.

The White House issued a statement

The White House issued a statement about the attack on Sunday.

“While we are still gathering facts about this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iranian-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” the statement said.

“The three American soldiers we lost were patriots in the best sense of the word. And their ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten by our nation. Together we will uphold our sacred duty to their families. We will strive to be worthy of their honor and valor – the White House said.

“We will continue their involvement in the fight against terrorism. And there is no doubt – we will hold all those responsible accountable,” it added.
