The victim of the scam was an 82-year-old resident of Józefów. During a telephone conversation with a fake granddaughter, a woman believed in a made-up story about a road accident she had caused and finally handed over her savings and valuables to scammers. The losses amounted to nearly PLN 140,000 – said the younger aspirant Paulina Harabin, a press officer of the police in Otwock.
An 82-year-old resident of Józefów fell victim to a scam last Wednesday. A senior received a call from a person impersonating her granddaughter, who informed her that she had caused a road accident and needed PLN 180,000 to avoid going to prison.
– When the 82-year-old replied that she did not have such an amount, an alleged policewoman joined the conversation, who said that she would help her granddaughter with all the formalities and asked the woman to pack all the money and valuables she had in a bag, because she would eat them personally from pick her up. The woman followed the instructions of the scammer and thus lost cash in the total amount of over PLN 88,000 and items worth over PLN 48,000, described Harabin.
Police warn against scammers
The police officer called for caution. – Let us remember that if we pick up the phone and hear a voice on the other end asking us about details about our private life and possession of valuables, including money, it is a signal that we are talking to a potential fraudster. In such a situation, please disconnect immediately. She also pointed out that police officers ask all people to warn their parents and grandparents against similar situations. – Let’s tell them what to do if someone calls them asking for a large amount of money. Let us also pay attention to such threats to the elderly, whom we know live alone. Any attempted fraud must be reported immediately. To do this, call the emergency number 112 or go to the nearest police station.
