The man Julia Roberts believed to be her great-great-grandfather is not really related to her. This means that the real name of the actress should not be Roberts at all.

Julia Roberts on the show “Finding Your Roots” learned that Willis Roberts, whom she considered her great-great-grandfather, was not really related to her. Based on DNA tests, it was possible to determine that her great-great-grandmother apparently had an affair with a married man after her husband’s death.

Julia Roberts is actually Julia Mitchell

“Finding Your Roots” is an American program in which the host, historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. reveals the results of genealogical research of famous people. The episode aired on January 4 and featured actress Julia Roberts.

Gates informed the winner Oscarthat Willis Roberts died more than a decade before her great-great-grandmother Rhoda Suttle Roberts had a son, the star’s great-grandfather John. While Willis and Rhoda were indeed married from around 1850, Willis could not have been John’s father and thus Roberts’ great-great-grandfather. – Wait, I’m not Roberts? the actress asked the host of the program.

Gates explained that through DNA testing, it was possible to link Julia Roberts to a man named Henry McDonald Mitchell Jr., who was her real, biological great-great-grandfather. – So we’re from the Mitchells? asked the actress. “Yes, biologically you are Julia Mitchell, not Roberts,” replied the host.

Gates explained that the show had been able to confirm that Roberts’ real great-great-grandfather, Henry Mitchell, apparently had an affair with the actress’s great-great-grandmother Rhoda after the death of her husband. Mitchell had a wife and six children at the time. His mother, on the other hand, lived only a few houses from Rhoda.

– On the one hand, I am in deep shock. It’s fascinating. But on the other hand, there is a part of me where I am calmer when I can hold onto the thought that my family is my family. And I prefer the name Roberts,” the actress said.

Recently, another surprising fact about Julia Roberts’ family came to light. The actress announced that the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize Martin Luther King and his wife paid the hospital bill when Julia was born. Her parents could not afford the costs. “They helped us get out of trouble,” she admitted.
