The Children and Youth Parliament has returned after a break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The young people discussed topics related to the ideals of the soldiers of the Home Army and the National Armed Forces. Some of them asked to speak to the Seym about current and most pressing problems on that day. For the youngest, colorful attractions, cotton candy and ice cream have been prepared.
“Ideals of the soldiers of the Home Army and the National Armed Forces important to young people” – this is the topic of this year’s Children’s and Youth Parliament, which on Wednesday – on International Children’s Day – met at the parliamentary seat. This is his XXVIII session.
The young people were greeted by the marshal Of the Seym Elżbieta Witek. The Sejm of Children and Youth has 460 deputies. The organization of the chamber is modeled on the procedures in force in the real Sejm.
On that day, Radomir Wit, a TVN24 reporter, was at Wiejska Street. – Young people pointed out that what is the subject of this Sejm does not necessarily reflect what lies in their hearts and minds and what is the most important from their perspective when it comes to the education system and the situation in Poland – he described some of the speeches from the audience plenary.
– The situation of young people in Poland is tragic. The school is politicized, the education system does not bring the desired results and the law is not respected. I will give an example of a situation from Szydłowiec, where a teacher, PiS councilor, Zdzisław Bąk, threw out girls from a remote lesson as a sign of a strike in the photo. This is a clear limitation of the constitutional right to education – said Kacper Kaleta at the rostrum.
Referring to the subject History and Present, proposed by the Ministry, Przemysław Czarnek, known as “HiT”Kaleta said, turning to Czarnek who was absent from the room, that “the only additional story we need is the government in the ministry.”
– We should focus on topical topics that are today, now and tomorrow, and not on historical topics that cannot be changed. The Sejm of Children and Youth is an educational project, which means that it is organized by the Chancellery of the Sejm so that we can debate on various topics and get to know the work of the parliament. So why can’t we talk about things like inflation of almost 14 percent? – asked Oliwier Chudzik in turn.
Dino Park and cotton candy for the little ones
For the youngest, treats and bouncy castles have been prepared for the youngest – Dino Park and Bajkozja. – There is ice cream, cotton candy – Wit said.
Attractions were also prepared, among others, in the Column Hall. – We wanted to make this day pleasant for you and show that the Seym can also be a place of fun – said Elżbieta Witek to the children. The marshal wished the children that they would always be smiling and had as many reasons for joy as possible.
– I know that there are children from Ukraine with us, we warmly welcome you – added Witek and greeted them with applause. – I am delighted that you have made so many friends among Polish children. It is wonderful. May these friendships last forever – she added.
During the first deliberations, war was discussed as a threat to a happy childhood
The Sejm of Children and Youth is an educational project aimed at shaping civic attitudes, spreading knowledge among young people about the principles of functioning of the Polish Sejm and parliamentary democracy, and for several years – also activating young people to act for their local communities.
Participants of the Sejm of Children and Youth may only be students who on the day of enrollment – March 1, 2022 – were 13 years old and who on the day of the SDiM session will not be 18 years old. You can only participate in a session once.
The first session of the Sejm for Children and Youth was held in 1994 on the initiative of the president of the Polish Humanitarian Action, Janina Ochojska, and the deputy director of the then Information Office of the Chancellery of the Sejm, Urszula Pańko. Its theme was “War – A Threat to a Happy Childhood”. It was a response to the then ongoing military operations in the former Yugoslavia, which turned into the bloodiest conflict in Europe since the end of World War II. In the following sessions of the Children and Youth Seym, the following were discussed, among others issues of ecology, eco-development, globalization, school, student self-government and child labor.
So far, the Sejm of Children and Youth has not been held only three times: in 2021 (although recruitment was carried out) and in 2020 due to the epidemic COVID-19 and in 1999. In 2018, the session was moved from June 1 to September 27.
Poland is the first country in Europe to organize such an educational project. Currently, children’s and youth parliaments meet in, among others, Portugal, France, Great Britain, Finland and the Czech Republic.
