Another star has died at a tragically young age.
According to multiple Korean news outlets, K-pop star Yohan, a member of the boy band TST, has been found dead at 28 years old.
The details of his death are still unclear, but the singer’s record label, KJ Music Entertainment, confirmed the news in a statement to press, writing:
“We are sad to relay the most unfortunate, sorrowful news. Back on June 16, TST member Yohan left this world. The late Yohan’s family is currently in deep mourning. The family has pleaded that media articles about Yohan’s passing, such as those making speculations about the cause of his death, be refrained out of respect.”
The statement didn’t address the star’s cause of death, nor did it acknowledge the recent string of deaths of South Korean performers: Yohan’s (real name Kim Jeong Hwan) passing marks the fourth South Korean young music star to die in the past 8 months.
In October, 25-year-old K-pop star and actress Sulli was found dead in her apartment by her manager. An investigation determined the death was by suicide, as a note was found at the scene. Law enforcement described the note as Sulli expressing her feelings, but the contents of the note were not revealed.
A month later, 28-year-old K-pop star Goo Hara was found dead in her home in Seoul, Korea. Laura Bicker, the Seoul correspondent working for the BBC, confirmed some of what the police had announced in her own reporting, while adding:
“The South Korean celebrity Goo Hara, a former member of popular K-pop girl group Kara has been found dead at her home. The 28-year-old was found dead around 6pm. We are awaiting more details. So sad.”
Hara’s death came months after she was reportedly found unconscious at her home the previous May and rushed to the hospital after she had allegedly attempted suicide. At the time, she was involved in an ongoing dispute with an ex-boyfriend, who was allegedly threatening to circulate a sex video to ruin her career.
Yohan shot to fame in 2015 as a member of the boy band NOM; after NOM broke up, he joined TST. The group released its fourth album, Countdown, in January.
We’ll have to wait and see if more details of his death come to light. Our hearts go out to his family, bandmates, and fans during this difficult time.
