Over PLN 20,000 was collected during a fundraiser for the funeral of Kacper Tekieli, the tragically deceased husband of Justyna Kowalczyk. It was she who asked for a donation to the “Promyk” shelter in Gdańsk instead of flowers for the funeral. Pets will get what they need most.

“Angels” – this is how donors are called by employees of “Promyk”, a shelter for homeless animals in Gdańsk. Kacper Tekieli was one of them. – A man with a radiant smile, joy, great empathy. He stole us by coming, leaving and running away. This was also the case the last time he came with food – recalls Katarzyna Zaleska from the shelter for homeless animals “Promyk” in Gdańsk.

– There was not a single picture of this car when these gifts were unpacked. There was no hype around it. It was very modest and so deep, from the heart – adds Emilia Salach, deputy director of the Gdańsk zoo.

In addition to specialized food, a few weeks ago the climber brought dietary supplements and toys, i.e. the so-called extras, which the animals cannot count on from the planned budget. Even if he’s gone, he’ll stay with us. This amount that has been paid is a huge surprise for us – admits Emilia Salach.

From the heart’s need

A few days before Kacper Tekiela’s funeral, Justyna Kowalczyk, privately the climber’s wife, asked for donations to help the shelter. Her husband loved animals. – This appeal was just such a signal that we are, of course, in terrible sadness and regret, because what happened is absurdly tragic, but the world is beautiful and we just look forward – believes Piotr Pustelnik, mountaineer and Himalayan conquerors of the crown of the Himalayas and Karakorum.

So far, nineteen thousand zlotys have been transferred to the account of “Promyk”. – We feel honored. We will buy them interactive toys that the volunteers will be able to use in everyday games and socialization. We will buy grass for the aviary for the cats. One where there is no grass as if by nature – says Katarzyna Zaleska.

A tragic journey

– He will remain in our memory as such a friend forever – assures Emilia Salach. Kacper Tekieli fell with an avalanche while trying to climb all four-thousanders in the Alps. – I will remember him for such an extremely joyful smile, for that characteristic croissant he always had and who said that this life is so cool and you have to take it in handfuls. – says Piotr Pustelnik.

Money can still be donated to the shelter, which now houses about two hundred dogs and cats.
