PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński announced on Friday that he would “telephone ask” the EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, to “finish his mission” in the EU. When asked by a TVN24 reporter whether the PiS president had called him, Wojciechowski replied that he “didn’t know, didn’t check.” He added that Kaczyński’s knowledge about the problems in agriculture “is not complete.”

Journalists in the Sejm asked the president on Friday PIS Jarosław Kaczyński, whether he is satisfied with the work of Janusz Wojciechowski, who has been the EU Commissioner for Agriculture since 2019. – I think that the commissioner – and I will call him today because I cannot do otherwise – asked for this: he should finish his mission – said Kaczyński.

– But whether he will finish it, I simply don’t know, because I have no influence on whether he is a commissioner or not. This is solely his decision, but due to these very unfortunate statements, he should end his mission – he added. In Poland – as before in many other EU countries – a large farmers’ protest has been taking place since today. They block roads in over 250 places in the country. The deputy prime minister, the head of the Ministry of National Defense and the president also called for the commissioner’s resignation PSL Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Wojciechowski: I didn’t check my phone today

Wojciechowski was asked by TVN24 reporter Artur Molęda whether Kaczyński had called him. – I don’t know, I didn’t check – he replied. As he added, Kaczyński’s knowledge, “like many politicians, is not complete in this matter.” – I will try to provide all MPs with more complete information – he said.

He also announced that he did not intend to resign. – I face great challenges related to defending the interests of farmers – he added.

Wojciechowski also commented on the matter on Polsat News. As he said, “I will not act under pressure. (…) I have very serious tasks ahead of me.” – Pursuant to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Commission, members do not accept instructions from the government – he commented. When asked about the call from Jarosław Kaczyński, he replied that he “didn’t answer the phone today.”

– I will speak about my activities in a few days. It will probably be on Thursday. I don’t plan any such decisions today, he added.

Meanwhile, farmers are protesting all over Poland, including: against the inflow of Ukrainian grain. According to the commissioner, “cheap grain from Ukraine” is needed by owners of large farms, e.g Spain or in Italy. – If there were no Polish commissioner where he is. There would be no restrictions on importing from Ukraine – added.

Kosiniak-Kamysz: Wojciechowski resign!

Earlier in the Sejm, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz drew attention to the ongoing farmers’ protests in some European countries, and from today also in Poland. He said that “there have never been such protests in Europe.” – We understand the reasons for farmers’ protests also in Poland. The negligence of the last eight years is unacceptable, he emphasized.

In his opinion, “the lack of profitability in agriculture is tragic.” – You have brought the Polish countryside to the brink of bankruptcy. And who is responsible for this? Who is the Commissioner for Agriculture in the European Union? Janusz Wojciechowski from PiS, nominated by PiS for this function – he said.

He quoted Wojciechowski’s entry from December 2021. “When it comes to agriculture, I am not riding on the wave of the European Union, the European Union is riding on my wave. The green reform of the common agricultural policy was created in Warsaw and was first called the PiS agricultural program. The reform of the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) is 100 percent in line with this program consistent and very good for Polish farmers,” the commissioner wrote then.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said that “there is a man in Europe who united all European and Polish farmers against the reform he proposed.” – This is Janusz Wojciechowski. Resign! – Kosiniak-Kamysz called.

Janusz Wojciechowski has been criticized in many countries in recent months as the commissioner responsible for agriculture in the European Union. During the September debate in the European Parliament on the inflow of Ukrainian goods to the Community, he argued that the EU “provides support for farmers” and that the countries directly bordering it – thanks to Brussels’ actions – have “stabilized markets”.

In August, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz – then still in the opposition – showed a letter sent by Wojciechowski to PSL, in which he asked for help in persuading changes in agricultural policy in the ranks of the European People’s Party (PSL MEPs sit in it). Kosiniak-Kamysz described this letter as an “act of desperation” and noted that, unable to control agriculture in the EU, Wojciechowski “turned for help to the head of the only party that knows about Polish agriculture.”

On Thursday, several hours before the farmers’ protest, Wojciechowski, in a social media post, listed how the EU had helped farmers in recent days and added that he “respects the voice of farmers” and “is with them.”

Farmers’ protest

Farmers from all over Poland started a protest on Friday, which is expected to last for 30 days. It will include, among others: at the blockade of roads and border crossings with Ukraine. Protesting farmers oppose the introduction of the EU Green Deal and the inflow of goods from Ukraine.

Farmers are also protesting against some of the solutions included in the Green Deal, including: In Romania, FranceSpain and Belgium.
