Kalisz police were called to a dog locked in a hot car. Despite the efforts of local shelter workers to cool the animal's body, they were unable to save it. The dog's 26-year-old owner was charged with cruelty to the animal.

– He left the dog in a closed car between 2 and 3 p.m. on Saturday. The temperature was at least 34 degrees Celsius, which posed a threat to the animal's life and ultimately led to its death – said Maciej Meler, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Ostrów Wielkopolski.

The dog owner admitted to the charges brought against him, but refused to provide an explanation. In order to ensure the proper course of proceedings, the suspect was placed under police supervision and banned from owning animals.

Under the provisions of the Animal Protection Act, he faces up to three years in prison.

On Saturday the thermometer in Kalisz showed a temperature of over 30 degrees Celsius. Kalisz police were notified on Saturday that there was a Doberman in a locked car in a parking lot in a housing estate on Podmiejska Street that needed help. In addition to the police, firefighters, a veterinarian, and employees of a shelter for homeless animals also joined the rescue operation. The firefighters broke the car window and pulled the animal out.

The shelter workers tried to cool his body with wet towels. – During the rescue, the shelter workers burned themselves on his body. According to the veterinarian, the dog was boiled, his body temperature was 60 degrees Celsius – said Jacek Kołata, the manager of the Kalisz shelter for homeless animals.

The police established the owner's details. It turned out to be a 26-year-old. During the test, he had almost a per mille of alcohol in his system. He was unable to explain to the police why he had left the animal in the car.

The police have launched an investigation into the animal cruelty. The man was required to appear for questioning at the Kalisz police station on Monday at 12:00. Since he did not appear, the prosecutor issued an order to detain and bring him in.
