Kalisz. Two 20-year-olds accused of murdering a homeless man. The prosecutor demanded 25 years in prison

He was a good man, he never harmed anyone, said the deceased's brother during one of the hearings. Two 20-year-olds allegedly killed a 60-year-old man in crisis because, as investigators found, they wanted to teach him a lesson. The trial in the District Court in Kalisz (Greater Poland Voivodeship) has just ended. The prosecutor demanded 25 years in prison. The defense attorneys requested that the offense against one of the defendants be reclassified as assault and against the other as assault with fatal consequences.

The verdict is scheduled for March 22. Prosecutor Adam Jarych from Ostrów Wielkopolski said in his final speech that the case was one of the most shocking cases in recent years.

He demanded 25 years in prison and 10 years of deprivation of public rights for the defendants Alan O. and Alan D. The lawyer of the first person asked for the offense to be reclassified as assault with fatal consequences, and the lawyer for the second person asked for the offense to be reclassified as participation in a fight.

The tragic event occurred on the night of October 11-12, 2022, in one of the vacant buildings in Zacharzewo near Ostrów Wielkopolski.

Prosecutor's Office: they acted together and in concert

The police were notified that there was a man's body in the building. A forensic medical autopsy conducted to determine the cause of death showed that the man had been murdered. Two 18-year-olds from Ostrów Wielkopolski were detained and initially confessed to the crime of murder.

The prosecutor's office accused both of murder with the intention of taking the life of the injured party. According to the prosecutor's office, they acted together and in concert. According to investigators, the defendants allegedly beat the man for at least 40 minutes.

In court, both defendants did not plead guilty to the charge of murder, but only to beating the victim.

They said that at night they decided to go to one of the vacant buildings where the man was supposed to be staying. One of them said they needed to find him and teach him a lesson.

The defendants' testimonies vary as to the role each played. According to Alan O., both of them beat the victim with stakes with the same intensity. The second defendant said that he hit the injured party only once on the leg with a stick.

They face eight to 25 years in prison

When the victim stopped moving, the teenagers left the scene. They learned that the man had died two days later from the media. Both said they regretted their actions. The defendants face eight to 25 years in prison.

Alan O.'s defense attorney requested that the offense be reclassified as assault with fatal consequences and that he be sentenced to a penalty within the statutory limits of this provision, i.e. from one to three years in prison. Alan D.'s defense attorney asked for the offense to be reclassified as assault and for a two-year prison sentence to be imposed.

Victim's brother: he didn't deserve to die like that

The murdered man's brother participated in the trial.

– He was a good man, he never hurt anyone. He lived with me because he was single. He was sick and abused alcohol. One day he left home and never came back. I reported him missing. He didn't deserve such a death, he said during one of the hearings.
