Tornadoes, dust storms and wind gusts exceeding 130 kilometers per hour – such phenomena appeared over Kansas on Sunday. The violent weather caused serious power outages.

There were violent storms over Kansas on Sunday storms. Downpours and strong gusts of wind were accompanied by hail, tornadoes and dust storms. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita estimated that gusts exceeded 80 miles per hour in some counties.

Numerous power outages

A dust storm passed over Great Bend in Barton County. As seen in the video recorded by one of the city's residents, brown dust completely obscured the sky. A tornado and hail the size of tennis balls were observed in Russell County. The storm damaged houses there, felled trees and destroyed energy infrastructure.

According to Poweroutage.us, power outages were reported to almost 45,000 customers by midnight local time. Firefighters from the city of Wichita were dispatched throughout the night to respond as fallen power poles caused numerous fires.

According to NWS forecasts, severe weather will continue in Kansas until at least Tuesday. Local flooding and further storms are expected on Monday.
