The management of Kaspersky Lab, the manufacturer of the well-known antivirus program, has been subject to sanctions in the United States. The reason is cooperation with the Russian army and services.

Twelve people were added to the sanctions list, including directors, management board members and other persons holding managerial positions in the Russian company and its British subsidiary. – Today's action against Kaspersky Lab's management underscores our commitment to ensuring the security of our cyber domain and protecting our citizens from cyber threats – said the deputy head of the Treasury Department USA Brian Nelson.

Sanctions for cooperation with Russian services

Sanctions against the company's authorities were announced a day after the Ministry of Commerce issued a final decision on a total ban on the provision of services and the sale of its products by Kaspersky Lab in the USA.

The decision was made as a result of an investigation that showed an “unacceptable risk to U.S. national security” and found the company to be cooperating with the Russian military and intelligence services.

The Russian company and its British subsidiary have also been put on a “blacklist”, which in practice prohibits American entities from doing business with them.

Under the “jurisdiction, control or orders” of Russian authorities

According to American authorities, Kaspersky Lab's antivirus products give the company broad access to files on computers on which these programs are installed, and the fact that the company is under the “jurisdiction, control or orders” of Russian authorities creates opportunities for Russian services to access sensitive data, including personal data.

Doubts raised by US authorities about Kaspersky Lab programs date back many years. In 2017, the Department of Homeland Security banned the company's software from being used on work computers across the federal government.
