On September 11, the Katowice authorities are announcing a celebration of granting city rights. The main point is to be a concert. Since Spodek is turning 50, Polish musicians Brodek, Grubson, Rojek, and Hołdys will perform hits of stars who performed in this famous hall. And they hosted: Metallica, Elton John, Joe Cocker, Deep Purple, Tina Turner and The Cure.
Katowice has been celebrating the granting of city rights since 2018. The first artistic director of the birthday concert was Organek. A year later – Abradab. Then came the pandemic. This year, the city is announcing the event again – this time under the leadership of Krzysztof Zalewski. The representatives of electronic music – Smolik and Kev Fox will take the stage first, followed by Monika Brodka, Grubson, Artur Rojek, and Zbigniew Hołdys.
The concert will take place on September 11 in the Culture Zone next to the Spodek entertainment and sports hall, which celebrates its 50th anniversary. That is why Polish musicians prepare their interpretations of the hits of stars that appeared in the Spodek Arena. They played there: Metallica, Elton John, Joe Cocker, Deep Purple, Tina Turner, The Cure.
A scene in UFO, food and drink in space
The Culture Zone, where the birthday stage will take place, will be open from 5 pm. You can participate in the event directly under the stage in the UFO space (limited to 2,000 people, in accordance with applicable regulations – 250 people without declaration, other persons declaring readiness to present a document confirming the fact of vaccination) Free tickets are required, the first pool of which will be distributed at the Tourist Information Center and at the Katowice Miasto Ogrodów office on September 6) and in the Kosmos space, where there will be food outlets.
A day later, on Sunday in the Culture Zone, motorcyclists will end their season. From 5 pm they will play: 4Szmery and K-Essence, then Leszek Winder with friends, and at the end the star of the evening – Sebastian Riedel and Cree.
Arvo Pärt was born 86 years ago, and Stanisław Lem would be 100 this year
For Sunday, Katowice has also prepared a classical music concert. As one of the masters of contemporary music, Arvo Pärt, celebrates his 86th birthday on September 11, with his song repertoire at St. Józefa in Katowice’s Załęże district, the Estonian choir Collegium Musicale will perform.
The concert is dedicated to seniors from Katowice. They can get free tickets through their associations, community centers and universities of the third age, as well as at the box office of the City of Gardens (Tuesday-Friday, 10am to 4pm).
At the very end of the birthday weekend, the authorities of Katowice invite you to the Szopienice district, where a mural on the wall of a tenement house at 11 November 6 Street is to be unveiled. The event participants will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Stanisław Lem, the father of science fiction in Poland. Interestingly, the second part of the mural was created in Lviv, where the writer was born. The pictures were created simultaneously, the creative process can be followed on the Internet. During its unveiling, from 9 p.m., the mural will be enlivened by mapping, i.e. special animations displayed on the wall.
The city’s birthday will be accompanied by a fair that has already started. Until September 19, exhibitors from various parts of Poland will be presenting regional specialties and products. And on September 11, the NGO Festival will be held on the market square, accompanied by stage performances, mini-concerts, dance shows, animations, face painting, balloon modeling, releasing large soap bubbles, large-scale outdoor games, various workshops – including doll making, in the field of hortitherapy, i.e. garden treatment, “zero waste”, i.e. how not to waste food, upcycling, i.e. how to transform a used thing into something better.
There will also be consultations on new technologies for seniors, free blood pressure and blood sugar measurements, as well as meetings with a nutritionist and braffiter.
At the festival, it will also be possible to take part in the census and vaccinate against COVID-19. The festival town will be open from 12.00 to 18.00.
Kazimierz Kutz and Józef Świder commemorated
On subsequent anniversaries of Katowice being granted city rights, sculptures are unveiled depicting people of particular merit for the city in the field of culture. Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Wojciech Kilar, Teofil Ociepka, Alfred Szklarski and Bernard Krawczyk, among others, have already been honored in this way at the Art Gallery at Plac Grunwaldzki. This year, the place will be enriched by busts of director Kazimierz Kutz and Józef Świder, a longtime artistic director of the Silesian Branch of the Polish Association of Choirs and Orchestras. The performer of the sculptural work commemorating Józef Świder is Tomasz Wenklar, and Kazimierz Kutz – Jacek Kiciński.
Celebrations at Grunwaldzki Square are scheduled for Friday, September 10, at 2 p.m.
