There will be no Ziomek and Parodia in Katowice. The officials did not agree to these unusual names for the children. However, the most people born here in 2024 were Janów and Maj. Telesfor and Bolko were also born in the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship, for the first time in a hundred years.
The Civil Registry Office in Katowice refused to accept declarations from parents about the choice of the names Ziomek and Parodia. According to the law, the child's name included in the birth certificate cannot be in a diminutive form or of a ridiculing or obscene nature.
From January 1 to December 24, 2024, 4,260 newborns were registered in Katowice. Among them, there are more boys (2,165) than girls (2,095). The Katowice City Hall reported that the most popular names among boys were: Jan (121), Antoni (111) and Leon (103). Among the girls: Maja (115), Laura (108) and ex aequo Zofia and Alicja (97).
The head of the Civil Registry Office in Katowice, Mirosław Kańtor, indicated in the message sent that for the first time Jan was the most frequently chosen male name in Katowice, although it had always enjoyed great popularity, especially in the 1950s.
– Leon's third place is worth noting. The name appeared in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, then disappeared for 30 years and was reborn after 2005. This year, last year's leader Filip was outside the top ten, and the national leader Nikodem was in fifth place – noted Mirosław Kańtor.
Telesfor and Bolko for the first time in a hundred years
He recalled that the name Maja was first given to a girl in Katowice in the 1970s. He estimated that it could have been influenced by the popularity of the youth series “Majki Skowron's Follies”.
– Maja got into the top ten three years ago, and this year she dethroned Hania, last year's leader. Laura's second place is not a surprise, as she has been climbing higher and higher in the rankings for 20 years – added Mirosław Kańtor.
In 2024, in Katowice, for the first time in a hundred years, boys were named Telesfor and Bolko.
