Kaufland decided to open stores on non-trading Sundays. The branches will be open from Sunday, September 5, the retail chain informed in a reply sent to TVN24 Biznes. The next Sunday, August 29, is not subject to the Sunday trading ban.

At the end of May this year. Kaufland announced that it is introducing postal services in all stores. At that time, however, no decision was made to use the exception provided for postal outlets and thus open shops on non-trading Sundays. Such a decision was made in August.

“Due to the constantly growing number of outlets opened on Sundays by competitors, retail chains that do not trade seven days a week are in a less favorable position and are exposed to the risk of losing customers. For this reason, Kaufland, as one of the last market participants, decided to the opening of selected stores also on non-trading Sundays, starting from 05/09 “- said Maja Szewczyk, Director of the Corporate Communication Department at Kaufland Polska in a reply sent to TVN24 Biznes.

As she explained, “these will be outlets only in places where competitors are already selling on all days of the week”. “We hope that the change, thanks to which our customers will have access to a wide range of products throughout the week, will have a positive impact on the comfort of shopping” – added Szewczyk.

Ban on trading on Sundays – Biedronka

At the beginning of July, we informed about an agreement concluded by Jeronimo Martins Polska with Poczta Polska. It is a test extension of cooperation, consisting in the possibility of collecting parcels directly in Biedronka stores. “For this reason, on non-trading Sundays, we can shop in some of the stores belonging to the chain” – it was reported.

At the end of 2020, almost half a hundred Stokrotka Express stores established cooperation with the DHL Parcel courier company. In March 2021, the Intermarche network also announced that some of its branches will be opened on Sundays and will provide postal services. Polomarket has joined the group of networks open on the last day of the week.

In November 2019, Eurocash Group announced that Abc stores can implement postal services in their facilities. Postal services are also provided in Delikatesy Centrum, Lewiatan or Euro Sklep.

On Sundays subject to the trade ban, not only smaller and larger grocery stores are opened, but also also DIY stores.

Trade ban on Sunday, August 29, 2021 – stores will be open

The act introducing a gradual ban on Sunday trading entered into force on March 1, 2018. From 2020, the trade ban does not apply only on seven Sundays a year. The act on the Sunday trading ban provides for a catalog of 32 exemptions. The prohibition does not include, inter alia, postal activities, does not apply to pastry shops, ice cream parlors, liquid fuel stations, flower shops, newspaper shops or cafes.

The next Sunday without the trade ban falls on August 29, due to the school shopping season. We will wait for the next ones until December.

Sunday trading ban – PiS project

It is possible that the regulations on the Sunday trading ban will be tightened soon. He went to the Sejm, prepared by MPs from Law and Justice, draft act amending the act on the restriction of trade on Sundays and public holidays and on certain other days. At the beginning of August, the draft was sent to the first reading in the Parliamentary Committee on Social Policy and Family. The representative of the applicants is MP Janusz Śniadek.

One of the proposed changes is that the exemption from the trade ban will be available to postal points of contact, the main activity of which consists in the provision of postal services, and not – as it results from the currently applicable law – all postal points of contact.

In addition, PiS MPs also want to oblige retail outlets that want to benefit from exemptions from the Sunday trading ban to keep monthly records showing the revenues from this predominant activity and what from the rest. “This record of income is to enable labor inspectors to check whether a given facility meets the criteria set out in the act,” we read.

It was proposed that the changes to the Sunday trading ban would enter into force 14 days after the date of announcement.
