Former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has been discharged from a hospital in Astana, the Interfax news agency reported. The condition of the 82-year-old former leader of the nation – as reported – is stable. Kazakh doctors had previously reported that Nazarbayev underwent a “medical and diagnostic procedure”.

“He was discharged due to his improved health,” an Interfax source from a hospital in Astana said on Tuesday.

The Kazakh section of Radio Svoboda previously reported that the former president’s 2.5-hour “therapeutic and diagnostic procedure” was carried out on January 20 at the National Center for Cardiac Surgery Research. “Information on the health of leaders in Kazakhstan are mostly undisclosed. But Astana’s heart surgeons, contrary to political customs, told about the operation carried out on Nursultan Nazarbayev. When he was president, almost nothing was said about his illnesses and diagnoses. So far, his successor’s health has not been reported either, Radio Swoboda reported.

Loss of privileges

Nursultan Nazarbayev, 82, who ruled Kazakhstan for nearly three decades, resigned as president in March 2019 and lost his remaining positions of power last year after massive anti-government protests and disputes with his successor Kasym-Jomart Tokayev.

In January this year, Kazakhstan’s parliament invalidated a law that protected the former leader’s immediate family from lawsuits. The deputies also deprived Nazarbayev of the honorable status of the leader of the nation.
