Kiernan Forbes is dead. South African rapper and his manager shot dead outside nightclub

Kiernan Forbes, one of South Africa’s leading rappers, known as AKA, was shot to death on Friday outside a restaurant in the coastal city of Durban. The singer was 35 years old. His close friend and manager Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane died with him.

Kiernan Forbes and Tebello Motsoane were shot dead outside a nightclub on Florida Road in Durban, South Africa, where they were celebrating the 35-year-old rapper’s birthday. The motive for the murder is unknown. An investigation is underway.

Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda told the BBC that the artist and his friend were heading to the car when two armed men approached them. They shot at them at close range and fled the scene on foot.

Police said they did not want to speculate whether the killing was premeditated, but said the possibility could not be ruled out.

South American rap star

Kiernan Forbes, known as AKA, made his first steps in the music industry as a member of the rap group Entity, later embarking on a solo career.

He has won numerous awards and nominations, both nationally and internationally. He has been nominated several times for the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award in the USA and the MTV Europe Music Award.

A few hours before his death, the 35-year-old posted on social media information about his new album, “Mass Country”, which is due out later this month.

Statement from the rapper’s family

On Saturday, a statement from the artist’s parents appeared on Forbes’ Twitter account.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son and confirm his untimely and tragic death on Friday evening. We await further information from the police,” we read.

“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, and most of all, the father of his beloved daughter Kairo,” the rapper’s family wrote. “For many, he was AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova and many other names that the crowds of fans called him. Our son was loved and gave love in return,” added the artist’s parents.

Crime in South Africa

The BBC points out that South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The charity Gun Free South Africa, which works to reduce gun violence in the country, estimates that an average of 30 people are killed by a bullet every day there.
