North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Samjiyon – a new city under construction on the border with China, as well as a sacred mountain there, venerated by his family, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing local media. This is his first public appearance in over a month – adds the agency.
Kim Jong Un “gave (the builders) instructions” on site, North Korean television reported, without specifying exactly when the visit took place.
KCNA announced that Kim gave thanks to the builders “who have carried out the party’s decisions and orders superbly.” Official TV called Samjiyon “the model city in a holy place … where the national revolution was born.”
“The construction of the city is progressing vigorously (…) and is to be completed by the end of this year,” it stated.
Until 2019, Samjiyon was a rural district, explains EFE. The construction was initially planned to be completed on the 75th anniversary of the creation of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (PPK), i.e. in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and international sanctions, completion has been delayed, the agency said.
The city is located near the active volcano Pektu-san, on the border with China. The mountain occupies a key place in Korean mythology, because, according to legend, was born there, among others Tangun demigod, founder of the first Korean kingdom. In turn, the propaganda of the communist North Korea claims that Kim Jong Un’s father, the son of the founder of the DPRK Kim Il-sung – Kim Jong-Il, was also born there.
