Klementyna Suchanow, leader of the Women’s Strike: I was accused of violating the inviolability of a policeman by staining his uniform

Klementyna Suchanow, one of the leaders of the Nationwide Women’s Strike, announced on Friday that she was “accused of violating a policeman’s immunity by staining his uniform.” The attorney of the officer, attorney Bartosz Lewandowski, said that it was about splashing the uniform with paint and intrusion into the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal. The case is related to the intrusion into the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal during the protest against the tightening of the abortion law in January this year.

The attorney of the policeman, attorney Bartosz Lewandowski, said that the case concerned splashing the uniform with paint and intrusion into the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal.

“I was accused of violating the inviolability of a policeman by staining his uniform. My lawyer asked for evidence in the form of a uniform. The request was rejected because the uniform was damaged. In response, attorney Lewandowski wrote that “The District Prosecutor’s Office Warszawa Śródmieście directs an indictment against Klementyna Suchanow for violating the bodily integrity of a police officer, damaging property and intrusion into the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal in January 2021”. He added that “contrary to the allegations, the uniform was photographed in detail and inspected”.

Bartosz Lewandowski: the uniform was not fit for use

Attorney Bartosz Lewandowski, who is the agent of the injured officer, said that the violation of bodily inviolability consisted in splashing the policeman with red paint and destroying his uniform. Therefore – as he added – the charge includes violation of inviolability and destruction of property, because “the uniform was no longer usable after being splashed with paint.” The second allegation is related to the intrusion into the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal.

The lawyer stipulated that he had not yet received formal information about the indictment, but all actions in the case had already been completed, so “either the prosecutor has already sent it or will send it at any moment”.

Protests against tightening of the abortion law

On October 22, last year, the Constitutional Tribunal, chaired by Julia Przyłębska, ruled that the provision of the so-called anti-abortion act of 1993, which allows abortion in the event of severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus or an incurable disease that threatens its life, is inconsistent with the basic law. The October ruling of the Constitutional Court sparked a wave of protests across the country.

January 27, 2021 The Constitutional Tribunal published the rationale for the judgment on abortion provisions. The judgment was then published in the Journal of Laws. After that, a wave of protests swept through Poland again.

At the end of January this year, during the event in Warsaw in front of the building of the Constitutional Court a protest against the tightening of the abortion law three people were arrested by the police. As reported, they invaded the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal. Suchanov was one of the detained persons.
