The District Prosecutor’s Office in Świdnica brought an indictment to the court regarding the death of three-year-old Hania from Kłodzko (Dolnośląskie Voivodeship). In the course of the investigation it was established that the mother and her cohabitant had mentally and physically abused the girl practically throughout her short life, in order to finally lead to her death. Investigators want the child’s mother and her partner to answer for the murder. A probation officer was also accused, who – according to the investigators – had improperly exercised supervision over the family.
Hania died in February 2021 in a hospital in Kłodzko. Initially, her mother and the woman’s cohabitant presented a version that the child fainted as a result of pouring cold water over him. Lucyna K., upset by the fact that her daughter had wet the bed, was to take her to the bathroom, put her in a shower cubicle and pour cold water over her for a few minutes. The caregivers assured that the girl then began to weaken, to vomit, and finally lost consciousness.
However, an autopsy showed that it was not hypothermia that caused the death of the three-year-old, but serious abdominal injuries. Lucyna K. and Łukasz B. confessed to severely beating the girl. In the following days, the investigators reported that Hania had been beaten on her hands, back and other parts of her body almost every day throughout her life.
Mother and cohabitant accused of murder
On Tuesday (November 9), the spokesman of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Świdnica, Tomasz Orepuk, informed that the indictment in this case had just been sent to the local district court.
– In the course of the ongoing investigation it was found that the girl’s mother, Lucyna K. and her cohabitant Łukasz B. tortured Hania with particular cruelty physically and mentally in the period from July 2018 to February 19, 2021, that they locked her in a dark room, limited the amount of food, called vulgar words, shouted and repeatedly hit various parts of the body, and on February 19, 2021 – acting with a direct intention – they murdered her with particular cruelty, as a result of motivation that deserves special condemnation – says the spokesman of the Świdnica prosecutor’s office .
According to the collected evidence, the accused also tortured Hania’s older sister mentally and physically at the same time.
The accused Łukasz B. and Lucyna K. face a sentence of 12 years’ imprisonment up to life imprisonment.
The accused was also a probation officer
Lucyna K. is a mother of three daughters. In addition to the deceased three-year-old, she also has daughters who are now less than two and nine years old. B. is the father of the youngest girl only.
The woman was awarded a pension because of a slight mental retardation. Due to the limited educational potential, her parental authority was limited. The family was assigned a probation officer to monitor the situation. The checks did not show that there was any pathological behavior in the family. After Hania’s death, it was checked in two ways whether the guardianship was properly exercised.
In April, we first learned the results of the inspection on behalf of the city hall in Kłodzko. For over a month, an employee of the office searched the documentation of the social welfare center. His report chronologically recreates the signals reaching the social welfare center from 2018 practically until the girl’s death. The notes taken by the family assistant were analyzed, as well as his reactions to the obtained information. The report shows that the family assistant was expected to receive many signals regarding the use of violence against the child.
A month later, the prosecutor’s office informed about the charges against the probation officer. According to the findings of the investigators, the woman, among others downplayed the injuries visible to the three-year-old’s body. She was also covered by the indictment, which was brought to the court.
– The prosecutor accused the professional probation officer of failure to fulfill his official duties consisting in the lack of proper, required by law control of Lucyna K.’s family environment, lack of cooperation with competent institutions such as school and kindergarten, attended by Lucyna K.’s children, lack of verification of information obtained on the use of violence towards the minor Hania, as well as providing untruths in the prepared documentation from the supervision – says Tomasz Orepuk.
