There was a chance to end the conflict with the European Commission. This opportunity was not used, but it was not really used because of the doubts raised by Solidarna Polska at the time and blocked those works to a large extent for some time, said Andrzej Duda in Davos.
President Andrzej Dudawho is at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was asked on Tuesday about an open letter he sent to him Zbigniew Ziobro. The Minister of Justice, Attorney General and leader of Solidarna Polska asked the president to initiate a debate on KPO.
Duda said that he could only express his regret that the law developed and submitted by him in February 2022, which was “accepted by European institutions, including the European Commission”, was delayed by politicians from Zbigniew Ziobro’s party.
The president assessed that “there was a compromise” on the project he had developed, which – as he said – was “far less questionable in terms of the system”. – Then unfortunately Solidarity Poland had trouble accepting it. It is no secret. If it hadn’t taken six months, if the European Commission hadn’t been given an excuse to get out of its previous acceptance statements, and through the amendments that were made, the situation would probably have been different, the president assessed.
– There was a compromise project, I worked it out, there was a chance to end this conflict with the European Commission. This opportunity was not used, but it was not really used because of the doubts that Solidarna Polska raised at that time and blocked those works to a large extent for some time – he said – I would like them to remember this, because today they are wringing their hands over this project, which is, he added.
Referring to the amendment to the law on the Supreme Court and other courts currently proposed by PiS, the president reminded that this is “the last link of the entire legislative process”, so only after the work in the parliament is completed will he decide on its further fate.
On January 13, the Sejm passed an amendment to the law on the Supreme Court, the draft of which was submitted to the Sejm by the PiS club. According to its authors, the amendment is to be a key “milestone” for the European Commission to unlock money from KPO. The bill will now be considered by the Senate.
